ID.me

Last Updated: March 11, 2026

ID.me is a credential service provider (CSP) for VA.gov applications and services that allows users to verify their identity with ID.me once and seamlessly log in across websites without having to create a new login or reverify their identity.

ID.me's technology meets the federal guidelines for consumer authentication set by the Commerce Department and is approved as a NIST 800-63-3 IAL2 / AAL2 credential service provider by the Kantara Initiative.

Integration endpoints

ID.me’s credential provider is initiated through their domain, api.id.me. When a user signs into VA.gov using ID.me, the authentication flows through eauth and then stops at api.id.me to allow the user to enter their credentials.

Monitoring

The following dashboards are available to monitor ID.me performance:

Outage status and maintenance windows

Outage

  • When PagerDuty has a status other than "active" for ID.me, a downtime notification will be displayed on the VA.gov sign-in modal and sign-in page.

  • #va-identity-alerts Slack channel, has automated alerts for any current known issues.

  • The Identity team will manually send update in #identity-support Slack channel when service is degraded and restored.

Planned maintenance

  • A banner will be displayed on the VA.ogv sign-in modal and sign-in page.

  • ID.me has a regularly planned maintenance window from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. ET on Saturdays.

Service level agreement

The Identity Platform team will communicate any CSP-related service interruptions to http://VA.gov application teams as promptly as possible.

Additionally, the VA.gov status page lists all systems’ operational statuses, including CSPs.

Escalation procedure

The Identity Team monitors system performance and inbound communications 24/7 via Pager Duty and responds within 30 minutes to any alerts.
