Assistive technology ineligibility tracking categories

Last Updated: May 12, 2025

After an assistive tech session, if the participant could not complete it or you feel they didn’t meet your requirements, researchers are responsible for reporting that to Perigean so they can update the database. Perigean will add a column in the study schedule spreadsheet to record the reason for ineligibility so they have a complete list of designations at the end of the study.

The following are situations in which assistive tech participants should be reported to Perigean:

Global issues

  • The exact requirements were not specified in the study details – e.g., full/legal/low-vision blindness, magnification levels

  • Participant inaccurately validated eligibility over email/phone

Ineligible screenreader users

Participant…

  • is using a different type of screenreader than initially confirmed

  • opted not to use it once in the session for various reasons

Assistive technology…

  • has unanticipated technical issues with Zoom

  • is an older model/version

Moderator…

  • cannot hear the screenreader in the background

  • determines that the participant has limited vision and does not rely solely on a screenreader

  • determines that the participant is not an advanced user in the session

Ineligible screen magnification user

Participant…

  • is using a different screen magnification tool than initially confirmed

  • does not need to use it at a required magnification for the study

  • opted not to use it once in the session

  • is new to screen magnification and has trouble using it

  • is using Zoom for magnification instead of a screen magnification tool

Moderator…

  • cannot see the magnification on their side

Ineligible voice command user

Participant…

  • has a different type of voice command than initially confirmed

  • opted not to use it once in the session

  • is using Alexa/Siri for voice, and not a voice command tool

Moderator…

  • could not hear the voice command prompts through the microphone
